Selena Gomez became emotional while speaking about the deportation of Mexicans in the United States, expressing deep sorrow over what she described as an attack on "her people."
In a now-deleted video shared on her Instagram Story, the singer and actress broke down in tears, saying:
"They are attacking all my people—the children. I don’t understand it. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I will try everything, I promise."
Shortly after deleting the video, Gomez posted an image of the Mexican flag accompanied by a sorrowful emoji. However, when the post did not receive the response she may have expected, she followed up with another message addressing the situation:
"It's not that you can't show empathy, but you can't just come out all dramatic, acting as if your own family is being deported. People who entered the country illegally are being deported—that is the law. Of course, it’s heartbreaking for families who are separated, but there are other ways to help, such as educating people on legal immigration processes."
Her emotional reaction sparked a wave of criticism across various platforms, with many questioning whether her own family had entered the U.S. illegally. Numerous comments accused her of being uninformed and overly dramatic, arguing that such displays did little to actually help the situation. Critics suggested that instead of shedding "crocodile tears," she should contribute financially to organizations that assist immigrants in navigating legal pathways.
"The law is not against immigrants; it is against illegal immigration. These are two different things," one commenter noted.
Others even mocked her acting, sarcastically suggesting that if she had displayed such emotions in Emilia Pérez, she might have secured an Oscar nomination.
Despite the backlash, Gomez’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding U.S. immigration policies and the emotional toll deportation takes on affected families.
